NHTSA Ends Investigation: The Chevy Volt is Perfectly Safe
January 20th, 2012 // 3:38 pm @ Miss Electric
The Chevy Volt is perfectly safe car. And today, we have the proof from NHTSA, who released a press statement stating that:
“The agency’s investigation has concluded that no discernible defect trend exists and that the vehicle modifications recently developed by General Motors reduce the potential for battery intrusion resulting from side impacts.”
Finally! Just as many of us knowledgeable Volt drivers have been saying, the test conditions under which NHTSA initially evaluated the safety of the Volt were faulty. Those conditions in no way match how the car would be handled in the event of a real-world collision.
Unfortunately, the PR damage has been done. Even though the agency writes that, ”NHTSA continues to believe that electric vehicles show great promise as a safe and fuel-efficient option for American drivers,” the media have completely over-reacted and misunderstood the nature of the investigation.
What we need now is a fresh start for the Volt and the rest of the electric cars on the market in 2012. I am currently working with a team of individuals and organizations to share a new story for electric cars that galvanizes the public imagination once again for an electric future.
